Garnett Gordon Barker, Sr., age 87, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022 in Bristol, Va. He was born on March 7, 1934, a son of the late Guy Hayter and Ora Fleenor Barker. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Wilma Almany Barker; and grandson, Joshua Barker. Garnett was a lifelong resident of Bristol Tenn. He worked as the Chief Dispatcher out of the Radford Division for Norfolk Southern Railway for many years. He was also member of Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church. Garnett loved trains, enjoyed cars, and always liked farming and livestock.
He is survived by his children, Garnett Barker, Jr. “Chuck” and late wife Tonya, Chris Barker, Lisa Smelser and late husband Lee, and Kathy Compton and husband Brent; grandchildren, Brandon Barker and fiancée Emma, Bradley Poore, Justin Poore, Kara Offield, David Smelser, Katy Smelser, Ethan Compton, Brendan Compton, and Katrina Compton; great grandchildren, Izabella Poore, Ava Poore, Noah Offield, Lucas Offield, and Sproles Poore; sister, Mabel Barker Jarvis and husband James; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 17, 2022 at Weaver Funeral Home in Bristol, Tenn. with Dr. Rick Light officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. The graveside service will follow the funeral service at Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol, Va. Garnett was my former brother in law. He was always good to me and my late huband, Gene Almany. He was a loving father, grandpa and uncle. He will be missed!
